               ACLU files lawsuit challenging Michigan's new ban on domestic-partner benefits claiming constitutional rights are being violated under the new law.

      • Washington – September 20, 2011
               The pentagon says that the Military is ready for repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell today ending the current policy under which gays could serve as long as they didn't openly acknowledge their sexual orientation.  To commemorate the moment, a gay Navy officer has married his longtime partner in Vermont.

      Michigan - Legislature

      •  Michigan - September 15, 2011
              The Michigan state House voted to prohibit public employers from offering taxpayer-paid health insurance to domestic partners living with public employees. The measure now moves to the Republican-controlled Senate. “Democrats who opposed the legislation say it is unconstitutional and would be challenged in court. They say public universities have the constitutional authority to determine their own policies, and that the Michigan Civil Service Commission has the power to make decisions about what kinds of benefits are offered to many state employees.”

      Rhode Island - Legislation

      •  Providence, RI - June 29, 2011
        The Rhode Island State Senate enacted compromise legislation by approving a bill allowing Civil Unions for gay couples.  The bill was already passed in the RI House and governor Lincoln Chafee has said he will sign it into law.

      New York - Legislation

      • Albany, NY - June 24, 2011:  
        The New York State Legislature enacted and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law the Marriage Equality Act making New York the sixth and largest state legalize same-sex marriage.
